Competent Person

One who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has the authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. There is no specific class, degree, or years of experience that can make someone a competent person. However, training can assist in the task. The company typically designates a job foreman, supervisor, or superintendent as a competent person. Upper management relies upon this individual to address hazards and train others in safety and health issues.
