National Electrical Safety Month

Electrical safety is important year-round in the cannabis industry, but it’s highlighted during May with a campaign spearheaded by the Electrical Safety Foundation International, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety in the home, school, and workplace.

Are You Following Best Safety Practices?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offers the following best practices for working safely with electricity in the cannabis industry, including:

  • Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead wires during cleanup and other activities.
  • Never touch a fallen overhead line.
  • Never repair electrical cords or equipment unless qualified and authorized.
  • If an overhead wire falls across your vehicle while you are driving, stay inside the vehicle and continue to drive away from the line. If the engine stalls, do not leave your vehicle. Warn people not to touch the vehicle or the wire.
  • A person who has received an electrical shock should seek professional medical care because serious internal injuries can occur.
  • Train your team. Enroll in online electrical safety courses to help keep your workers safe and your company in compliance.

May is a month to enjoy the flowers, soak up the sunshine and cross those final tasks off your spring-cleaning list. Some of those tasks may require skills and equipment you don’t often use, so it’s a good time to brush up on electrical safety.
