Worker Protection Standard (WPS)
The Worker Protection Standard (WPS) is aimed at reducing the risk of pesticide poisoning and injury in the cannabis industry among “Agricultural Workers” and “Pesticide Handlers”. This is a pesticide safety training program that is made specifically for the cannabis industry and mandated for those who have the potential for pesticide exposure. Cannabis cultivators who use pesticides must maintain a WPS program and ensure all proper training is provided with all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The purpose of the WPS is to protect agricultural cannabis industry workers from pesticides and their residues. If the pesticide label that you are applying includes “Agricultural Use Requirements”, workers must be trained on the requirements of the protection standards. Cannabis cultivation operations where pesticides are used in the production many times will also use commercial applicators that apply pesticides to these sites.
