Alberta SellSafe Staff Training

The Alberta SellSafe Cannabis Staff Training is a mandatory certification program tailored specifically for retail cannabis staff, designed to ensure responsible sales and understanding of cannabis-related regulations. This mandatory program, governed by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC), equips individuals with the necessary knowledge to adhere to Alberta’s cannabis laws and AGLC’s policies.

A key aspect of the program is its focus on social responsibility, aiming to educate staff on critical policies pertinent to their roles, methods to prevent underage cannabis sales, and awareness of the risks associated with cannabis. It’s important to note that while this program covers essential topics related to social responsibility, it does not encompass all cannabis laws.

Mandatory for a wide range of personnel within the cannabis retail sector—including owners, managers, supervisors, retailers, cashiers, and security staff—SellSafe certification is a prerequisite for those applying to become a Qualified Cannabis Worker through the AGLC. The program emphasizes the importance of having certified individuals who can contribute to a safe and compliant cannabis retail environment.

Upon successful completion, participants are required to provide proof of their SellSafe certification upon request, particularly during inspections. This certification can be presented in various forms, such as printed documents with a QR code, digital copies saved on personal devices, or printed from the individual’s SMART Programs account. It’s crucial for licensees to maintain a log of staff certifications to ensure compliance and readiness for inspection by AGLC inspectors.
