Minnesota Medical Cannabis Consultant Certification
The Minnesota Certified Medical Cannabis Consultant (CMCC) Training Program is a comprehensive workforce education program designed to prepare professionals to provide compliant cannabis consultations within Minnesota’s regulated medical cannabis system. The program aligns with the training expectations established by the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 342 and Minnesota Rules Chapter 9810, which govern the operation of licensed medical cannabis businesses and establish standards for personnel responsible for patient consultation.
This certification delivers a structured curriculum totaling at least thirty (30) instructional hours, consistent with the curriculum expectations described in the OCM training program submission guidance. This prepares participants to support patients navigating medical cannabis by developing competencies in patient communication, product education, therapeutic reasoning, and regulatory compliance within Minnesota’s medical cannabis program. Participants gain foundational knowledge in cannabinoid pharmacology, the endocannabinoid system, and the physiological effects of cannabis compounds, enabling consultants to explain how cannabis products may affect patients.
The curriculum examines available cannabis product types, methods of administration, dosing considerations, and the potential risks and benefits associated with different formulations. This knowledge helps consultants guide patients toward informed decisions while remaining within their regulatory scope of practice. Training emphasizes consultation practices and professional boundaries, ensuring that consultants understand the distinction between providing cannabis education and practicing medicine.
Participants learn how to communicate clearly with patients about product options, administration techniques, and safety considerations without diagnosing medical conditions or prescribing treatment. Additional instruction focuses on patient safety, responsible cannabis use, privacy protections, and compliance with regulatory requirements governing medical cannabis consultations in Minnesota. These topics help ensure that consultants support patient needs while maintaining the operational integrity of licensed cannabis businesses and protecting public health.
A cannabis business or licensed hemp business must comply with worker safety and health provisions under chapter 5205; Minnesota Statutes, chapter 182; and any standard adopted by the Department of Labor and Industry related to Minnesota Statutes, chapter 182.
In addition to workplace training required by applicable federal, state, and local laws, a cannabis business must ensure that a cannabis worker or volunteer receives annual training that applies to the role, authority, and responsibilities of the cannabis worker or volunteer.
